PROJECT ONE
In 1970 our photographic collective, Optic Nerve, built a studio/darkroom in the basement of Project One, an intentional warehouse community located in an abandoned candy factory south of Market Street in San Francisco. Along with the other residents, we designed and built all the walls, studios and living spaces in this 84,000 square foot, six floor warehouse. Project One was an important part of the counterculture of the seventies and housed dozens of artisans, musicians, sculptors, painters, writers, filmmakers, and technologists, as well as an alternative high school and a daycare center. These images reflect the diversity of the warehouse community.
